Young Drabek almost ready to make big leagues
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
This year has been called The Year of the Pitcher in baseball. With so many no-hitters and two (three?) perfect games, not to mention countless close calls for no-hit bids, pitching truly has been at the top of the conversation this season. But the marvels on the mound do not stop with major league hurlers. There are dozens of guys with blue chip arms in the minors who will not even step into a major league stadium. One of those guys is Kyle Drabek.

Jose Bautista denies steroid allegations
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
Damien Cox of the Toronto Star pointed out this past weekend that Jose Bautista, the major league home run leader, may be having such a dream season due to – yup, you guessed it – performance enhancing drugs. He did not state whether he knew for a fact that Bautista was juicing, just merely that we, as fans, have an obligation to question such a dramatic increase in performance thanks to what we’ve witnessed in the last 20 years of Major League Baseball.

Toronto Blue Jays’ J.P. Arencibia shines in dream debut
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
J.P. Arencibia put together one of the greatest major league debuts ever on Saturday, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a single and a double. No other major leaguer in the modern era has had that kind of production in their first big league game. Arencibia took an up and in fastball up and out over the left field fence. It was the first pitch he saw. Later, he took a low and away offering over the right field wall and rounded the bases to a standing ovation from the Rogers Centre faithful. He then delivered a curtain call.

Why trading Jose Bautista is a bad idea
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors, Trades,
The major league home run leader increased his total by two on Tuesday night, as he mashed a three- and two-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Toronto’s Jose Bautista has now broken the 30-home run mark and the Jays continue to put other teams on notice that he’s available. In fact, the Jays are listening to offers for a quarter of their roster, all of whom are moveable, but in Bautista’s case, it would not be a wise decision to ship him out of the city by the end of this week.

Yunel Escobar heading north in five-man deal
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Trades,
Yunel Escobar woke up on Wednesday morning wearing Atlanta Braves navy blue and scarlet. He went to sleep imagining himself in Toronto black, silver and blue. In a surprising five-man deal, Escobar and teammate Jo-Jo Reyes left the Braves system in return for Toronto’s power-hitting shortstop Alex Gonzalez and minor league prospects Tim Collins and Tyler Pastornicky. The former is known as a 5’7” strikeout pitcher and the latter an inexperienced shortstop with a high ceiling.

Jose Bautista snubbed from the MLB Home Run Derby
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The major league leader in home runs will be watching the Home Run Derby from the sidelines on Monday night. Jose Bautista, Toronto’s utility slugger, has 24 home runs at the break, won’t be swinging for the fences, but it’s not because of an injury or lack of willingness or anything of the like; he simply wasn’t asked to. MLB, in all their infinite wisdom, chose to overlook the unexpected slugger, and that fact has fans and players alike confused and upset.

The long ball is not enough
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,
There’s something to be said about a team that knows how to hit the long ball. That thing is that if that’s all they can hit, they’re still going to lose. Take the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the majors in long balls with 115. They also just dropped two of three games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Jays were limited to just seven runs in the series, every one of which came in as part of their four homers.

Roenicke family critical to baseball’s underbelly
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,
Baseball is full of families. The Griffeys, the Molinas, and countless others have adorned MLB uniforms and made great stories playing a great game. One of baseball’s lesser-known families is that of the Roenickes. Composed of Gary, his younger brother Ron, and Gary’s sons Josh and Jason, the Roenickes have a combined 22 years worth of MLB experience. While not a household band of names, the Roenickes have made their own small impact on the various teams they have played with.

Interleague play on its growing edge
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,
Interleague play wraps up this week, and if nothing else, it certainly seems like things have become a little stale. Overall, the American League has dominated their older brothers since 2004, and that hasn’t changed this season. With the novelty of the in-season, cross-league games worn off, it seems that every year more people are starting to question the necessity of Interleague play going forward. MLB is aware that there are those with their problems, but it does not look like things will improve soon.

The Litsch is back
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
Toronto pitcher Jesse Litsch made a statement on Saturday; and that statement is that he is back. Returning from the dreaded Tommy John Surgery in June of 2009, Litsch threw seven innings of three hit baseball with zero walks and zero runs allowed against the San Francisco Giants. For those paying attention, he is actually back as of last Sunday, but the right-hander got lit up against the Rockies, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings.
